Privacy policy
This page explains how naturalengland.org.uk uses any information you give to
us, and the ways in which we protect your privacy. The Data Controller is
Natural England. If this privacy policy changes in any way, we will place an
updated version on this page. Regularly reviewing this page ensures you we are
always aware of what information we collect, how we use it and under what
circumstances, if any, we will share it with other parties.
The Data Protection Act
Under the Data Protection Act 1998, we have a legal duty to protect any
information we collect from you. We do not pass on your details to any third
party or government department unless you give us permission to do so.
What information do we collect?
You do not have to register to view most of our website, naturalengland.org.uk.
However, some personal information is required if you chose to order
publications, apply for a job or provide us with feedback. To download GIS data
you need to register. Additionally, naturalengland.org.uk uses session cookies
and we extrapolate site usage information from log files.
Ordering publications
When you order a publication, we need to know your name, e-mail address,
delivery address, credit or debit card number and the card's expiry date. This
allows us to process and fulfil your orders and to notify you of the status of
your order. We also ask for your telephone number, which enables us to contact
you urgently if there is a problem with your order.
This information will be passed to Communisis, our distribution agents, who
will process and fulfil your order. This information is catalogued on our
customer database for statistical monitoring and audit purposes.
Downloading GIS data online
The registration information we require: your full name, your organisation and
your email address. This information is catalogued on our web server. This
information is catalogued so that you do not need to re-register when you come
back to the site. This information is also catalogued on back-up tapes to avoid
loss of data.
Our Geographic Information Unit also keeps a record of your registration
information for statistical monitoring.

If this feedback is asking for information, we may need to contact other
government departments to find that information. If your question is technical,
we may need to pass it to our technology suppliers. We do not pass on any of
your personal information when dealing with your enquiry. Once we have replied
to you, we keep a record of your emails for six months for reference and audit
purposes, after which it is deleted.
Applying for a job online
When you apply for a job online you will have to provide us with detailed
personal information. Our Human Resources Services Team will retain your
application form and other papers for at least six months to enable us to deal
with enquiries about your application, after which time they will be destroyed.
If you are not selected for the post but are a reserve candidate our Human
Resources Services Team will hold your documents for a 12 month period in case
a suitable alternative vacancy arising during that period.
Site usage information
In order to continuously improve our website, we use tracking technology which
monitors user sessions via a Java applet which activates a session cookie. No
information is Online Catalogued on your computer and no personal data is
obtained from this software.
What happens when I link to another site?
naturalengland.org.uk contains links to other websites, both those of
government departments and of other organisations. This privacy policy applies
only to our site, so you should always be aware when you are moving to another
site and read their privacy statement.
